What GF options do they offer?
They can make most pasta dishes with GF pasta. They have salads and some other options as well.

Woohoo! As good as it gets!
I really can’t say enough about this place. And a lot of people agree because every time I’m there, even if on a weekday, it is PACKED. My team and I made reservations for a Tuesday night and got seated right away when we got there. From there, they continued to exceed our expectations.
Our waiter was really patient when we asked questions about our dishes, let us make substitutions, and even offered to go back and check with the kitchen on some of the changes. I got my normal pasta ala vodka and it was huge. Definitely had enough for leftovers. Others in my group got the chicken parm, shrimp fra diablo (which definitely packed some heat!) And pork tenderloin to name a few. Everything ended up tasting delicious. For dessert we shared the chocolate lava cake (delicious!) and the carrot cake (unfortunately not that great. Not too much flavor and barely tasted like cream cheese icing).
The service here on top of the food is really what puts this place over the top. Everyone is so friendly from the hostess to the waiters. You really do feel so welcome here. When we left, they even gave us each a complimentary bag of biscotti!
Great spot for Italian in Downtown Hartford!! Came here with a larger party for dinner on New Year’s Eve. We had a reservation and were seated very quickly. Since we were going out after, we decided to skip the cocktails but I was eyeing a glass of wine!
For starters, we ordered the calamari. It was spot on with the marinara sauce. I wasn’t crazy about the lemon aioli which is surprising for me since I love lemon. They also gave us warm, house-made bread for the table with a smoked tomato butter….INCREDIBLE. Not everyone was crazy about it, but I was obsessed. I could have eaten that smokey butter plain, if it wasn’t weird. Just give me that and bread for dinner and I’m all set. Besides filling up on carbs, I ordered the Chicken Parm; classic. The marinara sauce was perfect. Also good amount of cheese that didn’t overpower everything. Instead of one large piece of thin chicken, it was two generous sized chicken breasts. Perfect opportunity to eat one, and save the other for later. The linguine underneath was cooked perfectly al dente. I’ll admit I happily ate the rest of this meal when I got home, still a little drunk from our New Year’s festivities…even better cold.
Prices were reasonable for the area and comparable to what you would pay at any Italian restaurant. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in the area.
Absolutely delicious! Great service by our waitress Rosie also by the manager Jimmy who went above and beyond to show us appreciation for moving our table so another larger party could be accommodated.
The garlic cheese bread was the perfect start. Pasta dishes were phenomenal , the gnocchi melts in your mouth.
Ps.. do yourself a favor and try desert, graham cracker ice cream and white chocolate moose was to die for.
Will be back
Great find for a nice Italian meal in downtown Hartford close to the Capital building. I sat at the bar since I was dining solo and treated myself to an ice cold Peroni to start. Service while dining at a bar is usually very attentive and Salute was no exception. Not only did I get my beer pronto but I was offered hot bread right out of the oven with a gorgeous smoked tomato butter.
So many great choices on the menu, but the sweet potato house made pasta in a cream sauce caught my eye and no other salad, sandwich, or pasta swayed me away. The dish was brought out super fast and while it did not look like a huge plate, I could not finish all of this rich lunch in one sitting. The pasta was absolute perfection and the sweet potato filling was delicate, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the cream sauce. I would highly recommend stopping in Salute for a classy lunch, a fun happy hour, or a romantic dinner.
Hugely disappointing, I gotta say. From start to finish.
Everyone says this place is awesome! I passed over going to TK down the street to try this place out and so disappointed.
The food was okay. It’s what I would expect to get at a 99 restaurant or a home cooked meal at someone’s house.
I ordered the pork tenderloin as recommended by the waiter and it sucked. It was charred to death and sadly.
I started with the caprese and for a restaurant that apparently makes their mozz in house…they don’t. Or they do a bad job because it was not awesome
The crab cake was a let down beyond belief. The crab cake insides were a tuna fish and mayonnaise consistency. Like crab salad. It failed every mark.
The prices are great and now I know why. It’s on par with diner food.
I love coming to this place whenever I crave pasta. I typically prefer a thicker pasta so I usually always sub for fettucini and no matter what I order it never disappoints! YUM
By the scores, it seemed that I was going to get a decent meal. I had been driving in this town and I was tired, and this was not my first choice but my first choice was closed. Plus it was raining. I just wanted to eat something and go to sleep, this place was open late, and that gnocchi al pesto w/ chicken seemed good. But… it was bland. Plus, there was hardly any chicken. And I don’t care about chicken, I prefer not to eat animals, but where is the chicken though?
I must say that the service was tops, and I was asked if everything was OK and blah, blah, blah, but that dish was mediocre. And the other thing that I must say is that the gnocchi itself was pretty good, but the pesto sauce was bland, like why even bother? And where’s the chicken? To make it all worse, the bread was hard and I don’t even know if they gave me margarine instead of butter.
Came here as a party of 5 on a Saturday night, we made reservations the same day with no issues (we also rescheduled because we were late, for 30 minutes later and it was fine)
For starters we got the fried calamari that was delicious. The white sauce that came with it was meh, but the marinara was good! Also wish it came with a lemon
I tried the special cocktail which was a lavender and sage martini. I liked it though it was a little bit too sweet
Then we got 2 orders of the gnocchi with chicken, which was delicious
We got the shrimp tomato linguini, which was delicious, the pomodoro pasta with meatballs and the ridiculous delicious rose tortellini. Get the rose tortellini!! It comes with sweet Italian sausage and a creme tomato sauce. So good
The service was kinda slow and it took a while for us to even order food, but I would definitely recommend and come back
This review may be a bit emotional for me, but there aren’t enough words in the world to describe the special connection I have with Salute. It also may be a bit biased since this was the place I had my first date with my now fiancée or because this was the restaurant her, along with many of our friends celebrated our engagement right after it happened, but I will do my best to explain why Salute is so near and dear to my heart… or maybe I just did? Lol.
Atmosphere/Appearance: Right off the northeast corner of Bushnell Park is the gem located right beneath an apartment building. There isn’t a parking lot available, but there is plenty of street parking which is free at 5:00pm, I believe. When you first walk in the door you get the impression that this place is a bit small, but it’s surely not. The bar area may be a bit crammed, but you can have happy hour out on the huge patio too, with weather permitting of course. Beyond the 3/4 wall that encompasses the bar are some dining tables and the entrance to the outdoor section. Toward the back of the restaurant the space opens up to reveal more booths, big tables for large parties and of course the bathrooms. This place feels very elegant and comfortable. I love coming here.
Service: Splendid. Jim, whom I believe is the owner, but I could be wrong is so sweet and comforting. He’s always smiling and has a great memory. He welcomes us in each time and even gave us a little gift for our engagement. Rafael behind the bar makes excellent drinks and is a great conversationalist. I always feel like I fit in when I come here.
Food: I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve been here so I’ve tried quite a few things. I do fancy their happy hour menu though. The martinis are excellent. The tuna maki is delicious and the flatbreads are wonderful. Happy hour is from 3:30pm to 6:30pm Tuesday through Friday, but on Mondays is starts at 3:30pm and goes until the close of business. Monday, May 15, 2017 is the first time I experienced such a lovely happy hour. It’s when my now fiancée brought me here. I had never been one to fancy happy hours since I like to eat late, got out of work late, whatever late enough to miss these fancy hours. I had always heard of them, but never experienced them. They’re magical. Lol. Now I’m ALWAYS looking for a good happy hour! Thank you baby! We’ve also come for dinner several times with friends and the food is always fantastic. As I’m writing this the gnocci comes to mind. Fabulous.
Value: It’s an Italian restaurant, but the prices aren’t what you’d expect! They’re very reasonable, especially happy hour. Martinis are $6.00 (the Espresso Martini is $7.00), house wines are $5.00 and beers are $4.00. Then there are also a few appetizers that are 1/2 off. There’s quite the selection.
So obviously I love this place because of how special it is to me and my soon-to-be-wife. Our first date and our engagement celebration were held here so I really hope (I have not doubt in my mind) that this place sticks around. We’ll be coming here for years to come!
Salute has become one of my favorite places! The staff is very friendly and very accommodating. The food is amazing & the Chai on Fire martini is to die for! Their happy hour menu is very reasonably priced so you can get good drinks and food and not break the bank. Don’t even ask me about their biscotti, it’s a must try but be careful you’ll get hooked like I did. Try the flatbread and the sweet potato ravioli on the hh menu you won’t be disappointed!
Wonderful friendly owner and staff. They are all about the customer. Service was outstanding. We started with a Caesar salad. Nicely dressed with Parmesan crisps. For lunch we had the
the gnocchi with chicken with pesto sauce and shrimp scampi. Generous lunch portion. The chicken was a bit tough so I can’t give 5 stars but I love Salute and would recommend and certainly go back. Prices are very reasonable.
Sometimes you win at Taste of Hartford and that day was today. Lunch for $20.18! Butternut Squash salad with an Apple Cider Vinaigrette to start was fresh and delicious. Rose Pasta entrée with Four-Cheese Tortellini with Sweet Sausage in a tomato cream sauce, spinach and mushrooms. The Tira Misu came home with me!
And then yesterday was another terrific to complement the older review above. After a matinée at Theater Work’s temporary location at the Wadsworth Atheneum we headed to Salute. My Calamari Puttanesca, a special, was excellent. I changed the offered Angel Hair pasta to Linguine and it was perfect with just the right level of bite. Excellent bread and then split a Tiramisu for dessert. TW discount sweetened the deal. Service, as always, was the best!

The cheesy bread is worth the trip tp Salute. Right near Trumbull Park, it’s a good place for happy hour food and drinks.
Overall, Salute is a nice restaurant with friendly staff, and walkable from pretty much anywhere in downtown Hartford.
Unfortunately I’ve never eaten here in person, but I recently attended a Christmas party they catered and it may have been one of the best meals I’ve eaten all year. The sweet potato ravioli & chicken saltimbuca were the most insane things ever. I noticed the chicken isn’t on the dinner menu, so hopefully it’s something they can always make! Also the cheesey garlic bread was incredible. I can’t wait to go check this place out in person.
Food is spectacular, overall customer service is equally impressive but the server I had in particular was poor. Service was fast and we were seated right away, given water, menus, etc. Our actual waiter was friendly enough, but rushed everything to the point where he mistook my requesting chicken as requesting shrimp on my entree and whenever he asked how things were he never actually listened to what we had to say before walking away. It was quite rude.
But the woman filling our waters was so kind and funny, and if I could I would have tipped her alone.
My mixed up order was fixed within 10 minutes so I have no complaints on overall service, just had an iffy waiter!
Salute is a frequent choice in the rotating series of restaurants I go to when visiting Hartford. The menu mostly consists of Italian-American standards like gnocchi with pesto/chicken, chicken Parmesan, shrimp scampi, etc.
Even though it’s rare that you’ll find something that I consider particularly creative or inventive, I’ve also very rarely been disappointed with whatever I choose to get. Everything is consistently well cooked and seasoned which I think alone is worthy of praise.
They are also relatively quick which is great when stopping by before a theater show at the Bushnell if you’re in a little rush. Overall I’ve chosen to return here many times and even though it’s not a menu that particularly excites me I’m glad there are old standbys like this that exist to satisfy.
Good restaurant with good food. You really get a bang for your buck as it is priced appropriately. Very yummy and delicious. Often go here for lunch.
We visited here after a show. The staff were kind, professional and «just the right amount» of attentiveness. Kudos especially to the waitstaff.
That said, I am sad to say that I was surprisingly not impressed with the food. For a higher end restaurant, I expected better quality and flavor.
For example, even though I ordered my fillet medium, and it was done to my liking, it was charred burnt on the top and the beef was not nearly as tender as I’ve had at other establishments. The pasta dish we had was ok, but again, not great. I’ve had much better.
Other than the entrees, which are the central focus of your meal … the salad, crabcake, and desert were actually quite flavorful and of the quality I would expect from such a restaurant.
Perhaps my standards are high, or maybe the kitchen had an off night. Honestly though, I don’t know how they have garnered a 4.5 star rating from 980 yelpers.
While the staff (5 stars) was very nice and can almost make up the difference for mediocre food, considering the price and class of restaurant, I expected better food.
Simply put, want a good meal? Come here. I had the broccoli rabe with hanger steak with some cheese sauce I think & potatoes. I love that they were open late & after a long day it hit the spot with a glass of Merlot.
This point place is Amazing!! We are in our way home from Maine and was looking for a sit downb Italian place. The wife had been letting me get lobsters and she just wanted a nice Italian place. This place was on the way.
We are SO glad we stopped by. The service and staff is friendly and warm. The highlight though is the FOOD!! IT IS AMAZING!!
GARLIC CHEESE BREAD, best we’ve ever had!
I had the Greek salad and swordfish special. DELICIOUS!! And the way they did the Mash potatoes. They really owned it!!
Wife had the promodoro pasta! Very delicious!! No complaints at all!!
Oh! They Validate parking too!!
Before we left we had a conversation with some of the staff. They gave us a a whole load of their GARLIC CHEESE BREAD! And they offered to buy me coffee when they found out we had another 6 hours to go.
I thought this place couldn’t get any better! This is hands down my favorite Italian restaurant ever!
What an awesome way to end vacation!
